Crown Lengthening
Overview
Crown lengthening is a procedure where the excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of a tooth's structure. If your gum line is uneven, crown lengthening can also sculpt the gum line to restore smile symmetry and balance. This anatomical crown exposure is also known as gum lift and may be performed for aesthetic or functional reasons.
The Procedure
After the treatment site is numbed a small incision will be made around the tooth to be treated, and the gums will be gently lifted away. This provides access to the root of the tooth and the surrounding bone. Once the appropriate amount of healthy tooth structure has been exposed the gum tissue is washed with sterile salt water and stabilized with sutures. The surgical site is secured with sterile bandages to prevent infection and allowed to heal.
The Symptoms
You may need a Crown lengthening procedure if you
- Suffer from a “gummy smile,” a crack near the gum line or have decay on the root of your tooth
- Have an excess amount of gum tissue or an uneven gum line
The Eligibility
You are eligible for Crown lengthening if you
- Have good general health and healthy gums
- Intend to create an aesthetic balance between your teeth and gums
- Wish to create a more proportionate and symmetrical smile
- Intend to lengthen the appearance of short and stubby teeth
The Risks Involved
The tooth treated might appear larger than the adjacent tooth and in rare cases could feel loose in the socket as the bone holding it in place has been chiseled down.
The Impact
The results of crown lengthening last for an extended period of time. One treatment is all that is required and you will not need any follow-up treatments to maintain the results.
