Mobility Teeth Treatment

A wiggly, loose tooth is a dental problem that calls for immediate attention. Generally, periodontal disease or a traumatic injury can damage the supporting structures leading to teeth mobility. Loose teeth are uncomfortable especially when you try to chew or eat food. Hence, a technique called splinting is used to stabilize and immobilize the teeth until the supporting tissues heal. Splinting is joining teeth together like pickets in a fence so that the biting forces are evenly distributed among a group of teeth rather than on just the loosened tooth. The Fiber splints are gaining immense popularity in the recent years due to their minimal invasiveness, reliable bonding, optimized handling properties and improved aesthetics.

The Procedure

The Fiber splints are easy to handle and position. The required amount of Fiber splint is measured and cut. Your teeth are cleaned with pumice slurry, and the shade of light-cured composite is selected. A composite bonding agent is applied to the tooth surfaces and is light cured for ten seconds. Then a thin layer of flowable composite resin is applied making sure that its tucks into the interproximal spaces. The fiber strip is now positioned and pressed onto the teeth and cured for two to three seconds. If necessary, the composite side of the fiber is polished.

The Symptoms

You may need a Fiber Splinting if you experience tooth mobility in the following cases

  • You have suffered a trauma to the mouth from a fall or an accident causing damage to the ligaments and the bone around the tooth
  • You are suffering from fairly advanced periodontal disease that weakens the ligaments and bone that surround and support your teeth
  • You are finding it difficult to chew and eat food
The Eligibility

You are eligible for Fiber Splits if you

  • Are looking to stabilize loose teeth as a result of plaque-induced periodontal disease
  • Have loose teeth and looking to increase comfort during chewing and eating food
  • Have sustained a traumatic injury to your teeth
  • Are looking to stabilize moderate to advanced tooth mobility that cannot be reduced by other means
The Risks Involved

Fiber splinting creates an environment for bacterial plaque accumulation and may lead to abnormal stiffening because the functional movement of the tooth within the socket is impossible. It can also lead to development of dental caries and in some cases can destroy other teeth if the forces are not distributed evenly and correctly.

The Impact

The Fiber splint is an aesthetic and functional solution of mobile teeth stabilization. Fiber splints are highly aesthetic and allow for an effective bond to tooth structures when applied correctly, resulting in strong and durable splinting. These splints are also known for their precise positioning, perfect fit and excellent adaptation to the tooth surfaces. However, regular follow-up visits are important to maintain the splint and ensure proper dental care.

Tooth mobility is never a good sign, but you don't have to lose your tooth. At the first hint of a loose tooth, see your dentist right away and opt for a Fiber splinting. Fiber Splinting – a great way to reduce tooth migration and mobility! Save your tooth with fiber splints!
