Got Dandruff?

Dandruff is one of those irritants that most of us encounter at some point in our lives. Finding little bits of dry, flaky skin that fall from the scalp onto your clothes or comb is a big turn off and still worse and embarrassing when someone else points it out to you.

A common scalp condition that makes your scalp itch, dandruff is often harmless and more of an irritant that makes you uncomfortable, than a clinical problem to worry about.Dandruff isn't caused by how you treat your hair but is related to the skin cells on your scalp that grow and die away too fast.

The popular myth about dandruff is that it’s caused by poor hygiene. Some studies mention that insufficient shampooing of the hair makes dandruff more obvious, though there aren’t any pressing facts that validate the same. Another theory is that a common fungus called malassezia may contribute to dandruff but researchers are yet to find definite causes of the condition.

While weather conditions- extreme cold, dry temperatures and the like can trigger off dandruff and aggravate its spread; dandruff may worsen when you get stressed or when you fall sick.

If you have dandruff, your dermatologist will usually prescribe an anti-dandruff shampooand some topical scalp treatments.

Dandruff is also the common name given to seborrhoeaic dermatitis, or seborrhoea. Seborrhoeaic dermatitis- the reddish, itchy rash causing flaky scales, can also cause dandruff to occur in other areas of the body, such as the ears, the face, and sometimes even the center of the chest.

For many people, dandruff does not require medical attention. However, if the flaking and itching continues inspite of topical applications and shampoos; you should consult with your doctor to rule out any other medical conditions such as fungal infections of the scalp, psoriasis or eczema.
