Foods To Keep Your Child’s Eyes Healthy, For Life!

You want the very best for your child — every parent does. This holds true for their eyesight too. Your child’s eyes are very special. In the early years, vision helps them to explore the world around them. Later on, as they enter school their eyesight lets them learn and discover – where 80% of learning is visual. Healthy eyes are therefore an important part of your child’s overall development.

Having healthy eyes starts with eating right! A balanced diet is not only important for your child’s overall health but also to keep their eyes as healthy as they can be. The following foods are beneficial in keeping your child’s eyesight in top-notch condition.

Leafy green vegetables: Leafy green veggies like the spinach, broccoli and kale have the highest levels of vitamin A, C, B12, and calcium. They are best known to improve your child’s vision. They also prevent macular degeneration and cataract formation as your child grows older. Want to get the most of these green veggies? Make sure not to overcook them as it may lead to losing the vital nutrients. Is your child fussy? Knead spinach in wheat flour and make green colored phulkas. Your kids will love them.

Crunchy carrots: Carrots are always associated with vision. Does the saying a carrot a day keeps the eye doctor away true? Yes, to an extent. What is in carrots that make them so good for your child’s eyes?  Well, carrots rich in beta-carotene can help promote better eye health and prevent the risk of macular degeneration. Feed your child with carrots and spare them from corrective vision care. Give your child a slice of raw carrot to munch or if they are picky eaters, make a smoothie. Sweet potatoes are also another source of beta-carotene that is good for your child’s eyes.

Fish: Fish contains high amounts of omega -3 fatty acids that are proven to have beneficial effects on the retina. Make sure to add tuna, salmon and cod in your child’s diet. Simply pan fry the fish and your child will love it. But if your child doesn’t like eating fish then it is best to give them a fish oil supplement daily.

Eggs: Do not underestimate the power of eggs. They are packed with nutrients that are beneficial for your child’s eyes. The yellow yolk is the most nutritious potion and helps to prevent eye diseases in your kids. After all, which kid doesn’t like omelette or scrambled eggs for breakfast? Make sure your kids eat eggs to ensure a healthy pair of eyes, for life.

Nuts: Nuts like almonds, pistachios, cashews and walnuts contain vitamin E and Omega-3fatty acids. Make sure to pack a handful of these in your kids snack box or mix it in their breakfast oat meal. A scoop of peanut butter spread on a whole grain cracker or bread is another tasty option for your child’s eye health.

Oranges and berries: These are super healthy eye foods. These fruits which are powerhouses of vitamin C helps reduce the risk of macular degeneration and the formation of cataracts. Pack a few blueberries in your child’s snack box. The sweet and juicy flavour makes it a tasty treat for the eye and palate. Give your child a cup of orange juice daily for healthy eyes. This enhances your child’s vision and eye health significantly.

All of the foods listed above play an important role in developing your child’s eyesight and keeping them healthy. Moderation is the key to adequate nutrition. Hence, a right mix of these foods will help make sure your child’s eyes get the nutrients they need.
